Zarnegar Hotel & Restaurant

Our choice (at the time based on financial limitations first and foremost) of accomodation in Kabul was the Zarnegar, a centrally based busy fusion of attached lodgings, kebabs and tea in an attached cafe. On the first level above the street on this photo is the outdoor balcony, from where activity on the streets below could be watched. On the upper levels were the east facing rooms themselves in which 4:30am-5:00am waking was not unusual each morning as the sun rose and baked the room through glass windows like a green house. Reasonably cheap and very dirty, it was probably the more interesting choice rather than one of the hotels which was very popular with foreign workers. All kinds of local characters were met in Zarnegar, a raw and rather unsecure option. If memory serves, the owner was initially hesitant to let us stay as our foreign status could be a complication. One night we heard a knock on the door, opening it to be met by several men who were local police or army asking us for further details about our visit in Kabul. Back to Photography Album. Byron Bay, July 31, 2014: A Nanny State?

“Australia is a country only for old people,” says Celine, a 22-year-old Indonesian student sitting next to me in a Qantas flight to Sydney. Celine lives in a suburb of Melbourne, and has been there for four years majoring food technology. “After 5 pm all shops are closed and the towns are deserted. There is absolutely no fun.” I am on my way to Gold Coast, to attend Byron Bay Writers Festival tomorrow; while Celine is heading to Melbourne and she will have some hours of transit in Sydney. Celine grumbles as she has no choice but to take this Qantas flight. She usually takes the Indonesian carrier, Garuda, which offers the only direct flight from Jakarta to Melbourne. But Garuda tickets are sold out, and only Qantas is available for her. But as I am a first timer to Qantas, I am very excited with this flight. In fact, I am first timer to any Western airlines. Dragon of Freedom (Indonesia, 2013) During the New Order under Suharto, Chinese culture was banned in Indonesia, including traditional and religious rituals. After the Reform Era, Chinese Indonesian (known locally as Tionghoa, from the Chinese word of “Zhonghua”) started to gain their rights as citizens, including performing their culture. The annual celebration of Cap Go Meh, the 15th day after the Chinese New Year/Spring Festival, is a great festive for the whole city. Chinese temples and other communities (including Muslims) participate in the parade, showcasing traditions and dances from all over Indonesia, including the Chinese Dragon Dance, for sure. Eagle hunting is regarded as unique tradition of the Kazakh (and also Kyrgyz) in Central Asia, but actually is better preserved in western Mongolia, where environment is comparatively less changed and the people is relatively more isolated to the outside world.
