Zarnegar Hotel & Restaurant

Our choice (at the time based on financial limitations first and foremost) of accomodation in Kabul was the Zarnegar, a centrally based busy fusion of attached lodgings, kebabs and tea in an attached cafe. On the first level above the street on this photo is the outdoor balcony, from where activity on the streets below could be watched. On the upper levels were the east facing rooms themselves in which 4:30am-5:00am waking was not unusual each morning as the sun rose and baked the room through glass windows like a green house. Reasonably cheap and very dirty, it was probably the more interesting choice rather than one of the hotels which was very popular with foreign workers. All kinds of local characters were met in Zarnegar, a raw and rather unsecure option. If memory serves, the owner was initially hesitant to let us stay as our foreign status could be a complication. One night we heard a knock on the door, opening it to be met by several men who were local police or army asking us for further details about our visit in Kabul. Back to Photography Album. Camel Fighting The Persian New Year of Naoruz is to signify the arrival of sun in north equinox, or the arrival of spring, and has been used as the day of New Year in Persian calendar since ancient time. Naoruz is usually on 21 March. The most vibrant place to celebrate Naoruz in Afghanistan is in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif. The Arab descendants there have tradition of holding camel fighting competition. Many of Afghan traditional games includes fighting, in local language is known as jang (“war”), like dog fighting, camel fighting, bird fighting, even egg fighting. Adu Unta Tahun baru Naoruz adalah penanda tibanya matahari di garis balik lintang utara, merupakan tahun baru dalam penanggalan Persia kuno, biasanya jatuh pada 21 Maret. Buzkashi Buzkashi, the national sport of Afghanistan, usually held in winter and around the Naoruz New Year celebration. Buzkashi is the ancestor of polo, of which the horse riders fight to get a headless carcass as the ball, and they have to bring the carcass around the ground to be the winner. This sport emphasizes on values of honesty, bravery, strength, and honor—all of which are the pride for the Afghans. Muslim Wedding (Mongolia, 2009) A Muslim Kazakh bride in westernmost corner of Mongolia is preparing for nikah, legalization of marriage held by Muslim religious leader. The Kazakhs are predominantly Muslim minority groups inhabiting western Mongolia, especially in the province of Bayan Olgii. Most of the wedding ceremonies here are held in Western (Russian) way, as it comes simpler and cheaper. In Kazakh wedding in Mongolia, vodka is always present. The father of this bride even held a cup of vodka in his hand, praying by reading Bismillah (in the name of Allah) to all guests. The mother of the bride then stood up, saying gratitude to all guests while wailing and weeping, and finished the vodka all at once. Pernikahan Muslim (Mongolia, 2009) Seorang pengantin Muslim Kazakh di ujung paling barat Mongolia sedang bersiap melangsungkan akad nikah.
