Zarnegar Hotel & Restaurant

Our choice (at the time based on financial limitations first and foremost) of accomodation in Kabul was the Zarnegar, a centrally based busy fusion of attached lodgings, kebabs and tea in an attached cafe. On the first level above the street on this photo is the outdoor balcony, from where activity on the streets below could be watched. On the upper levels were the east facing rooms themselves in which 4:30am-5:00am waking was not unusual each morning as the sun rose and baked the room through glass windows like a green house. Reasonably cheap and very dirty, it was probably the more interesting choice rather than one of the hotels which was very popular with foreign workers. All kinds of local characters were met in Zarnegar, a raw and rather unsecure option. If memory serves, the owner was initially hesitant to let us stay as our foreign status could be a complication. One night we heard a knock on the door, opening it to be met by several men who were local police or army asking us for further details about our visit in Kabul.       Back to Photography Album. Speak Without Interruption (2013): Give Afghanistan back to the Afghans

http://www.speakwithoutinterruption.com/site/2013/10/ubud-encounters-give-afghanistan-back-to-the-afghans/ October 20, 2013 Ubud encounters: Give Afghanistan back to the Afghans Posted by Muhammad Cohen in: Art, Asia, Books, China, Faith, Foreign Affairs, Immigration, Islam, Journalism, Military, Religion, Sociology, Terrorism, Travel, War, Women’s Rights, World Issues Australian painter Ben Quilty and Indonesian writer Agustinus Wibowo told the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival in Bali how they each reached Afghanistan by different routes for different reasons. But following their stays, they both also reached the same conclusion: after a dozen years and thousands of casualties, it’s time for Afghanistan to solve its problems without foreign help. Wibowo came to Afghanistan for the first time as a curious and footloose traveler. In Afghanistan as well as Pakistan, Wibowo said that since he came from Indonesia, people assumed he was Muslim. Telling them he was an ethic Chinese raised in the Buddhist tradition would either provoke suspicion or pointless debate, including attempts to convert him. “But I found the perfect answer,” Wibowo revealed. “When people asked if I was Muslim, I’d say, ‘Insy’allah’ [God willing].” Later, Wibowo said he found an even better answer from Afghan imam. “He told me he was a member of the highest religion of all: humanity.” Wibowo [...]

#1Pic1Day: Menggapai Harapan | Grabbing Hopes (GBAO, Tajikistan, 2006)

Grabbing Hopes (GBAO, Tajikistan, 2006) School children from an elementary school in Langar are happily exercising in the school garden. Despite the isolation and economic backwardness of the GBAO province, education is always on top priority of local governments. The literacy rate is almost 100% and little primary schools are available in main villages.

#1Pic1Day: Peninggalan KGB | KGB Legacy (GBAO, Tajikistan, 2006)

KGB Legacy (GBAO, Tajikistan, 2006) The Pamir border town of Murgab is among the host of Tajikistan’s last Lenin statues. The statue is located near the offices of the former KGB and the police militia. After the independence of Central Asian nations, anything Soviet-related was removed from sight. Lenin statues and street names were replaced by those of national heroes, and Cyrillic script replaced by Latin.

#1Pic1Day: Sesudah Perang | Life After War (GBAO, Tajikistan, 2006)

Life After War (GBAO, Tajikistan, 2006) Madam Dudkhuda is a typical town dweller in the Pamir Mountains. She works as bread baker, earning less than US$20 per month, while her geologist husband only earns about US$150 a year. There is no adequate job offered by the government, so most people in the mountainous province become unemployed or underemployed. Recently some NGOs like the Aga Khan Foundation and Acted provided some training programs to the communities, as well as microcredit financial aid, to help the rebuilding of the economy after years of civil war.

Kabul – Thousands Pairs of Legs

Practising with new legs Afghanistan, a war-torn nation, is where the handicapped war victims dominate the scene. A bazaar with armless beggars lying on hot asphalt, or pedestrian path with men sitting next to plastic legs waiting for alms, or handicapped street children crawling for tomorrow, are common things here. Fate is just decided by a simple foot step. You step on the wrong stone, and you explode. Landmines, millions of which scatter the country, are hidden enemies to bring unwanted nightmares to people. But you also may mention dozens other evil things that come along with the war: rocket, bomb blast, gun fire, malnutrition, until polio virus – which bring more and more Afghans to physical disability. It was fate which brought Najmuddin Hemal, 43 years old, to his current position. In 1988, when he was just 24 years young, he drove his car through a river bed. What a fate. He went out to the sand, stepped on the wrong stone, and blasted. He had his two legs amputated. But the disaster didn’t end his life. At the other end, the unwanted fate brought him a bigger opportunity to dedicate to humanity in Afghanistan. The man, who is [...]
